As part of its education funding legislation , the Florida Legislature took several steps last spring to force school boards to consider how much certain nonstudent-related items cost them. Pinellas’s per-pupil spending is among the highest of Florida’s 38 biggest districts, the new U.S. Census Bureau report says. But when it comes to putting that money into the classroom, Pinellas is in the middle of the pack. The district spent $8,656 per pupil in 2006-07, ranking it No. 8 among 38 Florida districts with more than 10,000 students. But it ranked No. 20 when it comes to the percentage of spending on “instruction,” according to some basic Gradebook number crunching.
