Well a belated happy 4th of July and hope you didn’t get too wet at your local parade and fireworks display. It was cold and rainy in Chicago but the morning and the evening were fine so no great impact on my plans. Yet beyond celebrating the signing of our Declaration of Independence and John Cabot’s discovery of our nation, the 4th also serves as a handy half-way point for the year so I thought I’d gauge my progress… 2009 Business Goals & Plans 1. Generate an average of $6,000 gross income per month and $72,000 for the year, specifically from lawyering revenue only .

President Barack Obama and his Russian comrade, President Dmitri Medvedev, agreed this week on the framework of a nuclear weapons treaty, planning to cut both nations’ inventories by as much as a third. The 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty expires December 5. The Wall Street Journal reports , “Under the agreement, deployed nuclear warheads targeted at each country would be reduced to between 1,500 and 1,675 over seven years from the current ceiling of 2,200.” Additionally, “Nuclear-weapons delivery systems would be reduced to between 500 and 1,100 from the current ceiling of 1,600.

July 10th, 2009 Joseph Romm: Every serious climate scientist and almost every serious political leader around the globe understands that we must keep total global warming as close as possible to 2°C. The G8 summit was a first tentative step down that path. But after 8 years of the U.S. government opposing any domestic climate action and actively working to block international agreement — and with the overwhelming majority of GOP political leaders demagoguing even the modest action of the Waxman-Markey bill — the rest of the world is understandably skeptical of US leadership.

Y ou may already know that I read a lot and of course being a designer and a blogger there’s many design blogs that I follow and read on a regular basis, but there’s also a lot of books about design, usability, typography, CSS, freelancing and a boat load of other related topics out there. All these books can help make you a better designer and business owner so I thought I’d make a list of some of my favorite ones and include a short summary/quote, book authors and the topics discussed in the books.

Before I begin – – the client I did this work for will not currently give permission to release their URL for this article – but I’m working on them! My client is a college who markets to military students. Because of the new GI Bill coming into effect August 1, 2009, there’s a huge push in this industry to reach out to veterans who might be interested in getting a – – basically free – – education. My goal was to build the site around the keywords most applicable to the a) topic; and b) demographic.

July 10th, 2009 Dean Baker: It is unfortunate that the leaders of the wealthy countries cannot begin to explain this issue seriously to their people. It is utterly absurd to demand that developing countries curtail their greenhouse gas emissions unless the wealthy countries pay them for the reduction. The logic is really simple. It’s as though the wealthy countries had a huge party and wrecked the place. The developing countries come in ten minutes before closing and then we propose that we all share equally in the clean up costs.

The Social Media Classroom is a web service created by Howard Rheingold that provides a space for students to engage in many of the most popular social networking activities out there. It includes blogs, wikis, forums, social bookmarks, user profiles and chat. The goal is to provide a very low threshold environment for students and faculty to learn about and to use social media as a way of augmenting the classroom. Scott Leslie set up an installation of Social Media Classroom the other day and offered for others to take it for a spin.

I don’t have enough to say on any one topic, so you get to listen to… ermmm… read… this “brain dump.” I’m awaiting the arrival of my WordPress 2.8.1 automatic update bar. It is sad that even the five-minute update is too much work for me now that I’ve gotten accustomed to the automatic updates, which work great for me. I know some have had issues with the automatic updates. I am not one of those users. If I were smart, I’d be backing up my database and files while I wait, instead of waiting for the update bar to remind me.

In WordPress the editing section of both Posts and Pages uses TinyMCE . TinyMCE is a Javascript-based WYSIWYG editor that is used in a myriad of web applications and platforms. It works by converting HTML Textareas or other elements into an editor for the user. TinyMCE is very extensible by using plugins to extend the functionality from the default setup. There are quite a few commercial and free plugins available.

If you asked Howie Schwartz what are the key skills that make his business a success, at least one of the answers would be “outsourcing” and another would be automation with effective tools. Whilst he employs 80 people, he also has a team of 200+ website creation, content development, link building and social media specialists to call upon (native English speakers). If you can avoid doing all the work yourself, either with automation or outsourcing it is more scalable.
